1950s 1953 CEIL CHAPMAN draped dress small | new fall
Exquisite 1950's Ceil Chapman dress! Ceil was an amazing designer that is well known to collectors. Done in navy jersey that is draped to perfection. Off the shoulder or just on the edge of shoulder style with ruched and gathered elbow length sleeves. Draped bodice that is fully boned and lined. Fitted waist and draped skirt that has a jersey lining. Super low back. Over the skirt is an overskirt that is fully lined in interfacing for a structured effect. The back of skirt is structured with the interfacing. Back metal zip.
The Met Museum has a similar design but done in chiffon and dates it to 1953.
♥We acquired several high end couture gowns from the Estate of Mrs. Steinberg of St. Louis. Mrs. Steinberg was a notable philanthropist and loved art. She came from an established St. Louis family involved in the Rice-Stix company. After her husband died, she gave funds to create an ice rink in his name based on the rink in Central Park, NYC. She had much art in her collection including Renoir, Van Gogh and Monet. She also gave to local hospitals, libraries and universities. .
