1950s JEAN PATOU couture strapless dress small | new fall
Museum worthy Jean Patou couture dress! Done in a heavy black linen and adorned with HUGE straw flowers with ball centers at the hem. Foldover sweetheart bustline, fitted waist and YARDS of fabric on the beyond full skirt. This dress is very substantial since the skirt is fully lined in horsehair. Boning on the bodice including on the inner bust cups. Inner petersham belt. Made in France.
Marc Bohan likely designed this dress for the house of Patou ( 1953-1957) and of course he later was the designer for Dior. (1960-1989)
Size on tag: none
Fits like: small
Condition: Very Good Vintage: some of the strips of straw on the flowers has come loose on the edges and some are missing. The heavy lining is detached from the inner belt at points, but this might be intentional. A little stress at the waist seam corners due to the weight of the skirt. Since the skirt is so heavy, we would recommend having a seamstress tailor some wide halter straps to hold up the bodice since they do have a tendency to slip down.
Bust (underarm seam to seam) : 34"
Length: 45" (top of bustier to hem of skirt)
m i n t : pristine with no signs of wear- possibly deadstock
e x c e l l e n t : signs of normal wear and age- no obvious flaws
v e r y g o o d : noted minor flaws that may have been already repaired - very wearable
